🌸 The Friendship That Doesn’t Keep Score

Some friendships pick up right where they left off. Others need an honest conversation and a little tending. A reflection on giving each other grace, recognizing care, and finding our way back to connection.

A MOMENT for the friendships that make room for real life.

Some friendships can pick up in the middle of a conversation that started three weeks ago.

No formal explanation. No opening statement from the defense.

Just, “Girl, did I ever tell you what happened?”

And somehow, you’re right back where you left off.

There is comfort in having someone who understands that a delayed reply doesn’t always mean a change of heart. Sometimes it means you read the message in the grocery store, answered it in your head, and went home with everything except the one thing you needed.

Life gets full. We miss calls. We forget to follow up. We have seasons when even the people we love receive a tired version of us.

A friendship that makes room for those seasons is a gift.

But making room for life takes care from both people.

It might look like a friend who checks on you without beginning with, “Well, I haven’t heard from you.”

Or someone who can say, “I know you’ve had a lot going on. I’ve missed you. When can we talk?”

There’s honesty in that. There’s affection, too.

We can miss each other without making each other feel guilty.

Room for Different Seasons

Sometimes one friend has more to give.

She has the energy to make the call, plan the lunch, or remember the appointment. The other is navigating grief, caring for family, looking for work, or trying to get through a difficult stretch without falling apart in the cereal aisle.

Later, their roles may change.

Over time, friendship gives us opportunities to be both the person who shows up and the person who needs someone to show up.

The care may look different. One friend sends thoughtful messages. Another brings food. Another makes you laugh so hard you briefly forget what had you upset.

One remembers every birthday. Another answers when you call with, “Do you have a minute?” and somehow finds forty-five.

We don’t all express friendship the same way. It helps to notice the care that is actually being offered.

When Something Needs to Be Said

Of course, there are times when the silence hurts.

Perhaps you’ve been reaching out for months. Perhaps a promise keeps being forgotten. Perhaps you’re always available, but rarely feel heard.

You can appreciate a friendship and still say, “I need something to change.”

Grace leaves room for that conversation.

“I’ve been missing you.”

“When that happened, I felt forgotten.”

“I want us to stay close. Can we find a better way to keep in touch?”

A friendship can be generous without requiring either person to swallow every disappointment. Sometimes speaking honestly is how we give the relationship a chance to grow.

A Small Way Back

Perhaps someone came to mind while you were reading this.

A friend you’ve been meaning to call. Someone whose last message is still waiting. Someone you miss, even though you haven’t quite known how to restart the conversation.

You don’t need a perfect explanation.

“Thinking about you today. I know it’s been a while, and I’d love to catch up.”

That is enough to begin.

I’m grateful for the friends who have welcomed me back into a conversation with warmth. I want to offer that same welcome—to remember that there is a whole life happening on the other side of an unanswered message.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can say is simply:

“There you are. I’ve missed you.”

Scripture for the MOMENT

“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
— Proverbs 17:17, KJV

Pause & Reflect

What helps me feel cared for in a friendship—and how do my friends express their care differently?

A Small Practice

Reach out to one friend today with appreciation instead of an apology or complaint. Tell her something specific you value about her. If you’ve been distant, suggest a simple time to reconnect.

A Simple Prayer

Lord, thank You for the people who make room for me. Help me offer that same kindness. Give me wisdom to recognize care, courage to speak honestly, and willingness to nurture the friendships You have placed in my life. Amen.

May we give each other room to be human—and reasons to stay connected.
